BYD SHARK 6 CAB CHASSIS ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA – ENGINEERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WORK UTES

The arrival of the BYD Shark 6 Cab Chassis marks a significant milestone for Australia's commercial vehicle industry. As the first plug-in hybrid ute of its kind to be offered as a factory cab chassis, it represents a new direction for tradespeople, fleet operators and businesses looking to reduce operating costs without compromising capability.

Industry commentators have highlighted the importance of the Australian market in the development of the Shark 6 Cab Chassis, with strong demand from local trades and fleet customers helping drive BYD's decision to introduce the model. The result is a vehicle purpose-built to meet the unique requirements of Australian commercial operators. For tray manufacturers and vehicle accessory specialists, however, the Shark 6 presented an entirely new engineering challenge. How do you integrate a purpose-built aluminium tray onto a next-generation plug-in hybrid platform while retaining all of the technology that makes the vehicle unique? That's the question our Design & Engineering team set out to answer.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE MODERN WORK UTE

For decades, Australian work utes have followed a familiar formula—diesel engines, ladder-frame chassis and aftermarket tray bodies designed around relatively simple vehicle architecture. The BYD Shark 6 changes that formula.

Powered by BYD's advanced Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Shark combines a turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors to produce up to 321kW of power and 650Nm of torque. It also delivers approximately 100km of electric-only driving range (NEDC), full-time all-wheel drive and a 2,500kg braked towing capacity, giving owners the flexibility of electric commuting with the capability expected from a commercial ute.

With the release of the Cab Chassis variant, tradespeople and fleet operators can now enjoy those benefits while fitting the trays, service bodies and accessories required for everyday work. For Australia's vehicle fit-out industry, this is the beginning of a new era.

A DIFFERENT TYPE OF ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Unlike a conventional cab chassis, the BYD Shark 6 incorporates high-voltage electrical systems, battery management hardware and charging components that needed to be carefully considered during product development. Installing an aluminium tray isn't simply a matter of adapting an existing design. Every mounting point, clearance and accessory had to be engineered specifically around the Shark 6 platform to ensure the finished installation complements the vehicle without compromising functionality. As a recognised BYD Australia tray supplier, our Design & Engineering team began developing a dedicated tray solution well before the vehicle's Australian release.

Rather than modifying an existing product, we engineered a purpose-built mounting system designed specifically for the Shark 6 Cab Chassis, ensuring a seamless installation that meets both our standards and BYD Australia's requirements.

SOLVING THE 240V CHARGING PORT CHALLENGE

One of the first design challenges quickly became apparent. The Shark 6's factory 240V AC charging port occupies an area traditionally covered once an aftermarket tray is installed. For most commercial vehicles this wouldn't be a consideration—but for a plug-in hybrid, convenient access to the charging system is an essential part of everyday ownership. Simply covering or restricting access wasn't an acceptable solution.

Instead, our Design & Engineering team developed a dedicated relocation system that transfers the factory charging port into the driver's side underbody toolbox. The result is a clean, OEM-style installation that keeps the charging connection:

  • Easily accessible
  • Protected from harsh working environments
  • Secure while charging
  • Fully integrated into the completed tray package

It's a small detail that makes a significant difference to the everyday usability of the vehicle and demonstrates the importance of designing accessories specifically for modern hybrid platforms.

WHY TRAY DESIGN MATTERS ON A PLUG-IN HYBRID UTE

As more manufacturers introduce electrified commercial vehicles, accessory design is evolving alongside them. Unlike traditional diesel utes, plug-in hybrid vehicles integrate charging systems, high-voltage components and additional electrical infrastructure that must all be considered during the design and installation process. Purpose-built solutions ensure owners retain full access to factory features while achieving the practicality expected from a commercial work vehicle.

The BYD Shark 6 is one of the first vehicles in Australia to bring these new engineering considerations into the mainstream, making vehicle-specific accessory development more important than ever.

PREMIUM ALUMINIUM TRAY

To complement the innovative BYD Shark 6 Cab Chassis, we've paired it with our Premium Aluminium Tray—an Australian-made tray designed to deliver exceptional quality, durability and value. Manufactured locally for fast turnaround times, the Premium Aluminium Tray provides a practical solution for tradespeople, fleets and commercial operators looking for a premium tray body at an affordable price. Now featuring the addition of a 63mm Tube Headboard, it combines strength, functionality and modern styling to perfectly suit the Shark 6.

Tray Specifications

  • Australian Made
  • 1.8 tonne floor
  • 225mm reinforced dropsides (250mm from floor)
  • 63mm Tube Headboard
  • External tie rails
  • Large over-centre catches
  • One-piece flared mudguards
  • Five-year warranty

Combined with our purpose-designed mounting system and integrated 240V charging port relocation, the Premium Aluminium Tray delivers a clean, factory-style installation while retaining the everyday practicality that makes the BYD Shark 6 such a capable work vehicle.

READY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF FLEETS

The release of the BYD Shark 6 Cab Chassis reflects the changing direction of Australia's commercial vehicle market. As businesses continue adopting lower-emission vehicles without sacrificing capability, purpose-built commercial accessories will become increasingly important. By investing in dedicated engineering from the outset, we've developed a tray solution that allows owners to enjoy everything the Shark 6 has to offer while maintaining the practicality expected from a professional work vehicle. Whether it's destined for a trade business, local council, government fleet, mining contractor or recreational touring setup, the Shark 6 now has an aluminium tray solution designed specifically for the task.

THE FUTURE STARTS HERE

The arrival of the BYD Shark 6 Cab Chassis isn't simply the launch of another new ute—it's the beginning of a new chapter in Australia's commercial vehicle industry.  We're proud to be among the first to offer a purpose-built aluminium tray solution engineered specifically for this groundbreaking platform. From our Australian-made Premium Aluminium Tray to our innovative 240V charge port relocation system, every aspect of the package has been developed with practicality, durability and long-term usability in mind.
